How many questions?

I am asked often how many questions on the test, how many questions based on x, y, or z. This is long, it's important.

As a successful board prep instructor, I would prepare for situation based questions.

Instead of thinking how many questions based on patterns. Think of: for each pattern, is this the right montage for this pattern, do I need to change settings to confirm, do I need extra electrodes bilaterally to confirm a focal change, how would I describe this pattern in words, what diagnoses are considered, what does that mean for prognosis, are there any infection related concerns, does this mean I need different PPE to do the test or to clean my leads after the test, is this a critical test result that needs to be reported STAT. Who can I share this result with? Are there imaging changes with this pattern?

What tools are most appropriate for this patient based on the pattern and probable diagnosis? Does this change the duration of EEG? Is it appropriate for the modality ordered? What medications are appropriate for this potential diagnosis? How do those alter the EEG?

Is the potential diagnosis appropriate with the age of the patient?

When you are able to reframe patterns of EEG and answer these questions you are setting yourself up for board success and career success. Just keeping working at it. The learning never stops.
