The ABRET handbook provides the general outline for the exams, a list of resources and reference material, and optional pathways of required criteria for exam candidates. It does not provide a specific plan for candidates to prepare to take the boards.

Prior to undertaking any significant task, it’s always best to create a plan. This plan should include the overall goal, individual tasks, resources, and dates that those goals should be obtained.

Every plan needs to be flexible to adjust with life changes.

Knowing where you are at the beginning of any weight loss, weight training, major travel plans, work changes, or educational endeavor, we need an initial measure. That’s how we know when we’re growing and changing.

Or you can create your own Personalized Study Plan by following the instructions below:

  1. Take the practice test for your modality (EEG or LTM)

  2. Sort your answers into correct (strong) and incorrect (weak) areas of knowledge

  3. Group the answers by category based on the ABRET Handbook Content Outline

  4. Pick your preferred date on the calendar for taking the exam

  5. Do a little math:

    1. First count the total number of weeks from today until the date of the exam

    2. Subtract 2 weeks from the total (the week before the exam is R&R or rest and reflect week and 2 weeks before is the REVIEW only week)

    3. Count the total number of subjects in the incorrect (weak) areas and divide that by that total number of weeks (For example, if you have 26 weeks, after accounting for the 2 weeks before the test, and 52 areas, you’ll need to study 2 weak areas every week for 26 weeks to be successful.)

  6. Assign 2-3 weak areas and 1-2 strong subjects to every week of your calendar

  7. Plan to spend 30-60 minutes on 3-5 days per week leading up to 2 weeks prior to the test for studying. You will spend 75% or 3/4 of the study session on weak subjects and 25% or 1/4 of the time reviewing strong subjects.

  8. Every 2-4 weeks (depending on how much time you have before your test) retake the same practice test. If your score is improving, keep up the good work. If your score stalls or gets worse, reach out and get help!!
