Latest update in Neurodiagnostics & Patient Care
With reports nationwide of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents performing their job at schools, churches, and hospitals, it is important to know your responsibilities to your job and your patients. HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is a federal law that regulates how we share patient information. We’ve mentioned HIPAA in our prior courses briefly and this is where that information is going to be crucial.
ICE agents are law enforcement but are not allowed to enter any secure areas, this includes testing rooms, patient rooms, and staff only areas. They are only allowed to be in public spaces and only when they are not disturbing anyone.
HIPAA states that we can only provide information to law enforcement if:
Required by Law. Covered entities may use and disclose protected health information without individual authorization as required by law (including by statute, regulation, or court orders).29
Law Enforcement Purposes. Covered entities may disclose protected health information to law enforcement officials for law enforcement purposes under the following six circumstances, and subject to specified conditions:
(1) as required by law (including court orders, court-ordered warrants, subpoenas) and administrative requests;
(2) to identify or locate a suspect, fugitive, material witness, or missing person;
(3) in response to a law enforcement official's request for information about a victim or suspected victim of a crime;
(4) to alert law enforcement of a person's death, if the covered entity suspects that criminal activity caused the death;
(5) when a covered entity believes that protected health information is evidence of a crime that occurred on its premises; and
(6) by a covered health care provider in a medical emergency not occurring on its premises, when necessary to inform law enforcement about the commission and nature of a crime, the location of the crime or crime victims, and the perpetrator of the crime.34
This means that they are only entitled to the minimum necessary information IF, and only if, they have a court order, warrant, or subpoena SIGNED by a judge.
Always direct your ICE Agent to your supervisor. This protects you from legal action.
Change to our scheduled topics!!
Schedule change to accomodate a popular topic request.
We’re doing Neonates and Pediatrics!!!
We’re going to just scoot all topics out one class period so we can cover neonates & peds for those who are taking exams soon.
So February 22nd, our first class with ASET CEUs, we’ll cover Neonates and Pedatrics - EEG Epochs, Activations, and Epilepsy Syndromes. It’ll be a loaded class. Come ready to learn AND PARTICIPATE.
ACNS Guideline on Neonate Terminology for Continuous EEG
Terminology Tips
Greetings fellow Neurodiagnostic Colleagues,
I have found over the years that one area we all need a boost in is terminology. Not ACNS terminology, that is for a whole class or series of classes. Just plain old medical terminology. Medical Terminology has its roots in Greek and Latin.
I’ve attached links to this page that I did not share with the main website as I wanted you as registered participants to have these special resources. Keep them to yourself please and thank you!!
I encourage you to view the class I offered on Medical Terminology as well. It breaks down how all these things are connected.
You’ll need medical terminology to pass the board exam as you will be expected to know how to interpret the histories so that you can provide a comprehensive and personalized exam to your patients, properly avoid contraindicated activation methods, and write a proper tech report.
ASET CEUs have been APPROVED!
The schedule has been established and the CEUs approved. We are ready to learn and earn!! 1.5 CEUs for every class attended live.
You must have the following completed to earn your CEUs:
ASET ID (active) if you need help, email me at pocketEEG@gmail.com
Current & active class registration
Attend the “overwhelming majority” of class (at least 80 of the 90 minutes)
Participate in class
Submit the course evaluation form I provide after class
You’ll notice that the schedule below ends in October. Don’t fret, a new class starts at this time so we’ll revisit classes you heard at the beginning but now you’ll earn CEUs for attending them. :-) Bonus!! Every time we listen to a lecture we learn more than we did the last time.
Let’s get to earning and learning.
Terminology for EEG
A recent lecture given through Stratus EEG U by Selim Benbadis, MD highlighted an older atlas of EEG by the Cleveland Clinic. This atlas provides examples of normal and normal variant patterns. These specific patterns are not addressed in the ACNS Critical Care Terminology Guidelines and are vital to your knowledge of EEG patterns. Dr. Benbadis was gracious enough to freely share this text. I encourage you to thoroughly read the attached atlas and really study the patterns.
We will cover this in class, but a 1.5 hour class twice a month cannot provide all the study time you need to really learn this material anymore than my feeble practice of the guitar at 10 minutes a couple times a week is going to turn me into a rock star.
Cleveland Clinic Atlas (DO NOT SHARE OUTSIDE OF THIS CLASS- FOR YOUR STUDYING ONLY)
Miss my Neuro Pathway Lecture on Filters & Instrumentation?
I gave a talk for Neuro Pathway on 11.19.24 all about Filters & Instrumentation. If you missed it don’t worry. I cleaned it up a bit, made it better and want to share it with you all - go to the tab Pocket Perks.
Then open the Filters & Instrumentation to get the slide show. I’ll record it soon so you’ll have a freebie lecture. Don’t worry the Filters and Instrumentation we’ll do in our paid class will be different and more interactive. I save the best stuff for my registered students. :-) <3
Meanwhile, here is a handout you can print that accompanies the slide show. You should take the opportunity to work along.
Lesson 1: Prepping for Board Prep
Greetings attendees, and fellow colleagues. I had a very streamlined course set up on this site for your first class. The website host was not working properly so we had to improvise. That is what technologists do. They improvise, adapt, and overcome, just like our Marines. :-) As a mother of a Marine, I wholeheartedly support them in their missions. Particularly those missions that call upon them to rescue people, reconstruct places after destruction, and other humanitarian aid.
Our first class is all about preparing for the Board exams. You’ll find resources here to help you get your environment, materials, and yourself ready for the test.
This link is the PDF of the class - it is a LARGE file but worth the download. CLASS PDF
The next link is the ABRET exam handbook for 2025.
The last link is the homework - Practice Test.
When you’ve completed the practice test, email me at pocketeeg@gmail.com .
Welcome to EEG Board Prep
It all begins with an idea.
This board prep will not:
Promise you will pass the board exam
Promise you can learn all you need to know by only showing up for class
This board prep will:
Be transparent about your expectations to be successful
Promise that if you apply yourself, study as instructed, and ask questions, you will have a better chance of passing than most.
Twice a month, live lessons are provided with supplementary material to aid you in passing the ABRET exam. These lessons will be recorded after the live lesson is held in order to include any pertinent questions and answers for all participants. The recordings will be available approximately 1 week after the live class is held.
You are encouraged to do the following to be successful:
Draw out your study plan (or purchase one from me)
Follow your study plan, studying for 1 hour, 4-5 times per week
Take your practice tests regularly, noting your grade, watching yourself improve or adjusting your studying if you find your grades are decreasing
Send all questions and inquiries to pocketeeg@gmail.com.
Thanks for trusting me with your board prep.
